Preparation

  1. Read the story through before presenting it to the children. Think about how you might engage your children in subitizing as you read (see Directions for some suggestions).

Directions

  1. Before You Read: Hold up the book. Ask children to describe what they see on the cover and to identify the items on the cover of the book. Ask, What do you think the book will be about? Point to each word as you read aloud the title and the names of the author and illustrator.
  2. As You Read: Ask the children, How many arms/eyes/ears, etc. do they see on the page? Have them touch theirs. How many handles are there on the sink? Wings on a bird? Bears are on the bed? Is this number of objects the same as that one?
  3. After You Read: Talk about the story. Ask the children to tell you things they know that come in 2s, 3s, and 4s. They can also find objects in the room that come in 2s, 3s, and 4s.
