Week 4: Places Plants Grow

Children listen to and discuss the book A Fruit Is a Suitcase for Seeds, by Jean Richards. They examine a selection of fresh fruits and the seeds inside.

The class examines and compares different kinds of plants and sprouting seeds from the Class Garden.

Children chant and act out the steps of planting and tending to a bean seed and watching it grow.

Children examine the sequence of photos in the Sprouting Seeds Photo Album and the photos and measurements in the Growing Graph. They tell the story of how their bean seeds and bean plants grew and changed.

Children photograph and describe their bean plants in a bag. Then they take a photo and discuss their bean plants growing in soil. Once a bean plant has emerged from the soil, they also record the plant’s measurement.

Children view photos and measurements of their bean seeds and bean plants taken on different days. They discuss how the seeds and plants have changed and grown, and pose questions.

Children examine and draw a selection of fruits and their seeds.

Children visit a digital community garden and help protect the strawberries from being eaten by bunnies. They design solutions to keep the bunnies away from the strawberry plants, and explore and test different materials as they play.

Children throw a giant die and remove cards from a game board if the die shows a source of water or light that will help a plant grow.

Children look at their seeds and plants and view the Sprouting Seeds Photo Album and the Growing Graph as they reflect on how their bean plants have grown and changed and what they have learned in this Plants unit.

Children watch and respond to a time-lapse video of a bean seed growing into a plant.

As children sing, they mime the steps of planting and caring for a seed and waiting for it to grow.
